Wey & Arun Canal

Wey & Arun Canal trust

On 6 May, Raksha arranged for us to spend our evening exploring the Wey and Arun canal. The weather was glorious as we arrived at Loxwood to board the Zachariah Keppel. As usual, Akela had his camera to record the evening.

Closing the gates

The Cubs soon became experts at working the locks

Open the gates

With the water level dropped it was time to open the gates

Bit of a step

Trouble was that the boat was now a bit low to climb back into

Onwards

With the gates open it is time to continue our voyage

The motley crew

You are here

Sean and Lee work out our position on the map

More volunteers

Bethany and Jodie close the gates

Teamwork

It takes 3 boys to close the gates on the other side

Starting level

When we arrived the lock was full and the boat was above the sides

Going down

Suddenly all there was to see was a smelly, muddy stone wall

Calm

The water ahead of the boat was completely still allowing some lovely reflections

Milepost

14 1/2 miles to the River Wey. The other side says 8 1/2 to the Arun

Local residents

We saw a pair of mallard on the slipway

Time to stretch the legs

Raksha lined up the Cubs on the towpath

The aqueduct

All aboard

Back onto the boat for the return journey

Another local resident

The swan seemed a little surprised to see us - there aren't many boats on the canal, especially in the evening

Into the lock

This time the lock is empty so we start off low down

Running water

The water rushed into the lock

More volunteers

This time it was Alfie and Jamie who opened the gates

Opening

While Matt and Matthew opened the gates on the other side

Even Baloo had a go

At the last lock it was Baloo, Richard and Callum who opened the gate

Onward

The boat left the lock for the last section of the journey

Out in front

Sitting at the front of the boat was very popular so we all took turns

You can see the report of our trip as reported in the Billingshurst Advertiser.

We'd like to thank the parents that came with us and also the volunteers from the Wey and Arun Canal Trust for giving us such an enjoyable evening.

If you would like to take a trip on the canal they operate at weekends from Loxwood and you can find more information on the Wey and Arun Canal Trust website. They also run a small gift shop at Loxwood to help raise money for the canal.
