Base signs

On Sunday 8 May 2005 the District Cubs held a sponsored orienteering competition in Lily Hill Park. This was followed by a picnic in the park and some African themed games.

What is orienteering? Orienteering is a cross between a treasure hunt, map reading and a cross country run. We provide you with a map of the park showing bases. You then have to visit as many bases as you can in the time allowed. Each base is worth a number of points and the team with the most points at the end of the afternoon is the winner.

Lovely setting

Lily Hill House is the backdrop to base number 9 which was on one of the oak trees in the meadow

In the bushes

Not all the bases were as easy to find. Base 12 was deep in the bushes

Fallen tree

Base 13 was on a tree stump with some lovely rhododendron flowers nearby

Lovely flowers

I don't suppose the Cubs noticed the range of rhododendrons that grow in the woods

Buttercup meadow'

Boys from 1st Ascot amuse themselves while we wait for the other packs to arrive

Busy Akela'

Akela is kept busy keeping a record of the entries having just got back from putting the bases up

Grand Howl'

It is always nice to start events with a Grand Howl. All the packs do it slightly differently so it is always interesting

Time to start'

Akela tells the District how the afternoon will work

Top people

We had all the top people in the park but what is the District Commissioner doing with that base? I hope she hasn't taken it down...

In the woods'

Suddenly the woods are full of Cubs looking for the bases

Here they come'

On the hilltop by the Wellingtonia trees a South Ascot Cubs sees 2nd Bracknell boys coming

Base 14

Cubs from 1st Ascot (All Saints) find tricky base number 14 amongst the holly trees

1st Ascot

The polite boys from 1st Ascot pause between the rhododendron bushes

4th Bracknell

At the edge of the rugby field the boys from 4th Bracknell head into the woods

There it is

The 4th Bracknell boys find base 10

Which way is it?

We had parents acting as marshalls to help any lost boys. Not everybody was delighted at the chance to wear orange jackets but they needed to stand out so that the Cubs knew that they could be approached and asked for help

2nd Bracknell

Boys from 2nd Bracknell find base 7 but Louis has spotted that more Cubs are on their way across the field

Ask the marshall...

Paul gives assistance to the boys from 1st Sunningdale who are searching for base 7

Striding out

Boys from 4th Bracknell hurry down one of the new paths on their way to the next base. They had to be back at the start on time to avoid losing points

Smelt the kettle boiling

Back at the start the District Commissioner is joined by Matt from the Ranger Service. Matt had kindly provided the maps for us to use and popped by to see how things were going

Picnic

After the orienteering there was a break for the picnic

Take cover'

When the rain came it was 4th Bracknell who were best prepared

Adding it up

While the Cubs ate their picnics it was Kingfisher who had the headache of working out all the scores. Top scores from each pack are at the bottom of this page.

Balls in the bucket

Then it was into groups for some African themed games.

Catch it

The Cubs have to throw the balls over the ropes so that they end up in the buckets

Debris

The sun lights up the balls as the game comes to an end

Water carrier

Meanwhile another group has the task of carrying the water from the well back to the village

Arrival point

Each team has to deposit their water in the bowl and the winner is the team with the most. Tim and the boys look after the bowls

Quick!

The Cubs arrive clutching their leaky cups

Catch every drop

Luke is careful to make sure that all his water ends up in the bowl

Stepping stones

The teams make their way across the field standing only on the stepping stones

The event was sponsored with all money going to the Bulangira Disables’ Association in Uganda. Six adult members of our District have been working since 2000 to provide the BDA with a vocational workshop. This has now been built and handed over to this group of disabled people in a rural area near Mbale in Uganda. They are aiming to make themselves self sufficient and now require tools and materials to produce saleable goods. The picture was taken outside the Vocational Workshop. The Ugandan national flag was given by the project team in the UK and the World Scout flag given by Windsor and Eton District. The Scout shirts were also given by the project team and are passed around the membership for special occasions!

We had a great afternoon despite occasional heavy showers and by the end of the afternoon we had raised £405 in sponsor money.

Top scores from the packs were as follows

2nd Bracknell 39 - Harry, Louis, Luke & Gareth
1st Ascot (All Saints) 39 - Jordan, James Hayes & Sebastian
1st Sunningdale 37 - Matthew & Guy
4th Bracknell 32 - Alexander, Sean & Jack
1st South Ascot 28 - Lawrence
