Youlbury 2005
Navigator's Badge Weekend

2nd Bracknell

SMICCTSO

Our Navigator’s Badge weekend took place from 25-27 February 2005 at Youlbury Scout Camp site near Oxford. We used the Camp HQ building which was nice and warm despite the freezing temperatures outside.

Birthday presents

Saturday was James' birthday and he brought his presents with him

Room inspection

We always start the day with inspection. Mang and Chil look for litter in the dormitories

Scott dormitory

The residents line up waiting for their inspection to start

Allen and Akela

Waiting in the main hall for things to start

Grand Howl - Saturday

As Allen Davis was visiting us we got him to do the Grand Howl to start things off

Bit chilly for camping

Mang and Chil braved the cold and slept in their tent rather than the lovely warm heated dormitories

On the trail

Harry prepares to lay a tracking sign

Which direction?

The Columbus group find a tracking sign

Gone Home

The Scott team decide to use this campfire circle as a giant "Gone Home" sign - and then pose for pictures

Hot soup for lunch

After all that tracking it was nice to come back into the warm for lunch

Tucking in

The hot soup went down very well

More badge work

The Cubs had to draw a local map to show their route from home to school or Cubs

Time for a break

The providore was open in the afternoon so the Cubs queued to spend their pocket money

Happy birthday to you

James' parents sent him to camp with a lovely birthday cake which we enjoyed on Saturday afternoon

On the top of Jarn Mound

We went to visit Jarn Mound. The Cubs take a break at the top

Mound with a view

Unfortunately even in winter the trees now obscure the view. The Cubs look to see what they should have been able to see

Stuck in the mud

The path back was rather muddy and Fraser almost got stuck

Local landmarks

More badgework - identify the local landmarks and mark them on a map of Bracknell

More landmarks

Eamon looks rather uncertain about these ones

SMICCTSO show off their hard work

Raksha and Shere Khan had been working hard in the kitchen to make our dinner

Yummy

Dinner went down very well. Delicious

Pudding

Strawberry or butterscotch?

Drying up

The Cubs had to take their turns drying up

Campfire without the fire

We didn't let a small thing like having no fire stop us

Funky monkey

Mang and Chil lead the funky chicken song

Morning sleepyheads

On Sunday morning we had to wake the Cubs up

Shere Khan leads Grand Howl

Sunday morning started with Grand Howl and then Cubs Own which Shere Khan ran

Free time

We deliberately didn't take a football but the Cubs still managed to amuse themselves outside

Treasure hunt

To put all the skills they had learned over the weekend together the Cubs were set a treasure hunt

Where next?

The clues took them across the whole campsite

Down at snake lake

Time for another clue by the frozen lake

A final Grand Howl

Baloo did the Grand Howl as part of the closing ceremony

On the balcony

The group gathers on the balcony of the Camp HQ at the end of the camp

We last visited Youlbury in Summer 2004 for our District Space Camp. See Past Events for the pictures from that camp.
