The weekend of 22-24 April 2005 saw 2nd Bracknell's Simpson Cup Winners descend on Walton Firs Camp Site. Rather unusually the competition was won by Brown Six at both Stags and Wolves. Their prize was a weekend camp for them and their friends as each member of the winning six could invite a Cub from another six to come along too.

Back in March the leaders visited the site and took the following pictures when the hall was all empty and quiet.

The Pembroke Building

This is the building we will be using. This view shows the entrance steps

The cooker

We have a big gas cooker for Shere Khan to play with

The main hall

The hall next to the kitchen will be where we do most of the indoor activities

Archers view

You can even watch the archery from the comfort of the hall

Bedrooms

There are 4 bedrooms with 6 beds in each for the boys and 2 bedrooms with 2 beds in each for the leaders

Pitch 10

The building comes with pitch 10 - a sloping field including 3 fire pits which we hope to make full use of and which Mang & Chil will be camping on

Toilet block

There is a toilet inside the building for night use but normally you will use the toilet block next door

Big field

The big field outside the building will be free for most of the camp so we can use it for our activities

In April things were a bit noisier

Indoor sing song

All the Cubs were excited when they arrived on Friday so even after a wide game they weren't tired out. In an attempt to calm things down we had a few songs with our supper

Have you seen my funky chicken?

Chil, Baloo and Mang lead this popular song

Have you seen my funky monkey?

It isn't just the leaders who do silly actions in these songs

Saturday breakfast

The Cubs did really well to stay quiet and in their rooms until 7am but they obviously knew that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and didn't want to miss it

Washing up

Each room took it in turns to do the drying up after a meal

Time for flag break

Being St George's Day we had arranged for our Cubs to break the flag for the whole site. However, it was a bit of a wet start to the day

Walk to the flagpole

The Cubs made their way to the flagpole through the rain

Waiting for Baloo

When we got to the flag the Warden had a message for Baloo so he had to phone home. We waited for a while and then had to do flag break without him.

Two bells means pack alert

Jonathan had some bell ringing coaching from the service crew before he rang the bell to bring the camp site to the alert

Orienteering

With Baloo having to rush back to Bracknell and the rain still pouring down we changed the programme around and did the site orienteering course. Can you see the letter on the totem pole?

It must be here somewhere...

The map showed a base in the avenue of silver birch trees that crosses the main field. Can you spot the letter before the Cubs?

Soggy footsteps

The Cubs cross the bridge over the ravine as they look for the last few bases on the orienteering

Working it out

Each base had a letter and the letters then had to be re-arranged to make a word

Home from home

Chil and Mang didn't sleep in the hall as they preferred to stay in their new tent

The red end points north

After lunch Baloo returned in time for him to run the activity about compasses

Archery

The other group was doing archery with the service crew. Before an arrow could be fired the crew went through the safety rules

Waiting quietly

The group that was waiting for their go sat quietly so that they didn't distract the archers

Concentrate

Then it was time for the Cubs to have a go

Bulls eye

Cameron did very well with his arrows and got one right in the gold

4 steps but which way?

Meanwhile Akela's compass trail was causing a bit of head scratching from the Cubs.

The adventure trail

One of the on site activities at Walton Firs is the adventure trail. We made the Cubs change into their oldest clothes as it looked rather muddy. Great!

Over the wall

The first obstacle is a low wall that you have to climb over

Under the bar

Then it is into the pit

Across the pole

Cameron treads gingerly as the pole was rather wet and slippery

Steady...

Jonathan has a bit of a wobble as he crosses the pole

Not as easy as it looks

Harry finds things a bit slippery as he crosses

Confident

Matthew steps out confidently. Despite the waiting mud nobody fell off into the water

Through the tyres

Michael races through the tyres

Through the tube

After the tyres there was a scramble net, drop, high wall and then the tube which was a little muddy at this end

Scramble over

Then it was back over the scramble net and on to the next obstacle

The swing

Mang proves that you can get across without getting wet feet. We've lots more pictures from here in shortly but first on with the course

More tyres

These ones were hanging on chains and were a bit tricky as Chris found out

Chain bridge

The final obstacle was the chain bridge

But now back to the swing...

There was such great a potential for "adventure" at the swing that the camera lingered there just in case. Here Daniel prepares to cross

Jonathan takes a dip

When it was Jonathan's go he seemed to slip off the rope and ended up wading through the puddle

Chris takes off

Chris leapt into the air and we thought he was bound to clear the puddle

... and lands

But no, a bit of a splash landing

Thomas dives in

Water flying everywhere as Thomas ended up wet

Splash

Luke fails to clear the puddle

Alex drops in

Almost across but Alex just gets a splash

Too fast

Michael mis-timed the rope and ended up running through the puddle

Not sure

Cameron takes stock from the high logs

Just clear

Ben manages to put his feet down outside the muddy area

Alex splashes in

The most spectacular picture that we managed to get from the course shows Alex ploughing into the water

Almost

Tomasz almost cleared the puddle but there were still a few splashes

Easy

Fraser flies over the mud

SMICCTSO dish up dinner

Shere Khan and Allan were in the kitchen this time and produced a wonderful dinner of chicken caserole and jacket potatoes

Tucking in

Seemed to go down well with the boys

Camp fire's burning

Despite the damp we decided to have an outdoor camp fire on Saturday night

In the dark

Mang watches the flames as the night draws in

Baloo singing (again)

Swing low sweet chariot this time but sadly no actions

Sunday morning

What a difference a day makes. Sunday dawned clear and sunny and the Cubs headed back to the flagpole

Flag break

Now this is what it should have been like yesterday. Today we have Cameron on the bell and Ben breaking the flag.

Fire lighting

Chil explained the finer points before the Cubs had to build their own fires

Will it light?

The first group appeared to have done everything right but the damp twigs and leaves wouldn't light

Mang does his best

Not sure if this is a fire or a birds nest

Flames!

This one lit nicely

Closing Ceremony

All too soon it was time to finish. Baloo did the closing ceremony as he was Camp Leader this time

St George's Day Parade

As we finished the groups from Spelthorne District started their parade. They had combined their St George's Day Parade with a fun day at Walton Firs.

Well done to Baloo who was running this camp as Camp Leader for the first time. This will be used as evidence to get his Night's Away Permit which will allow him to take the Cubs away without having to take Akela too!

We had a great time at Walton Firs and are very sad to hear that it is one of the sites that the Scout Association have decided to sell off.
