Our camp for first time campers started at 11.30 on Saturday 19 March and went through to 12.30 on Sunday 20 March.

This weekend was designed for first time campers to allow them to get their "1 night away" badge and therefore come on the camps in the summer. As well as making use of the site we made a cardboard city and thought about homeless people who have to sleep on the streets.

Picnic lunch

It was sunny and warm so we sat outside to have our lunch

Pioneers & Indians

Baloo hands out the rings as the Cubs play a wide game

Stop and think

Shere Khan and the Cubs discuss what it would like to be homeless

Cardboard City

The Cubs have to build themselves a shelter that they could sleep in and stay dry and warm

Pre-packed Sammy

Sammy managed to fit in an ordinary cardboard box but decided it wouldn't be very comfortable if he had to stay there all night

Big box

Tomasz and Robert found a huge box to be their shelter. Looks a bit cosy

Looks like rain

Shere Khan was providing the rain to test the shelters

Seems to work

Some shelters were more waterproof than others. There are 3 Cubs in here!

Splish splash

The rain arrives at Tomasz and Robert's shelter

Nowhere to run to

Matthew thought he'd be safe if he closed the lid of his box but Shere Khan had other ideas

Rather soggy

It appears that the rain got in

More rain

Michael and Ben hope that their cardboard will keep them dry

Thumbs up

It seems to have worked

Sammy waits for the rain to stop

Shere Khan is determined that water will get in

Not too wet

There were three Cubs in this shelter and they all seem fairly dry

Tight squeeze

Gareth decides that he can fit in a box but I don't think he'd like to be in it for long

Mang & Chil's treasure hunt^

Mang and Chil organised a treasure hunt through the site

On to the next clue^

The Cubs race off to the next clue

Where are they?^

Mang and Chil wait for the Cubs to solve the next clue

Rounders

Time for a spot of rounders in the afternoon sunshine. Allen Davis keeps score

Time for dinner

Shere Khan has cooked a delicious spaghetti bolognese for us

Tucking in

The Cubs are hungry after their busy afternoon

Custard

Baloo steps in to whisk the custard which will be served with Shere Khan's delicious homemade apple crumble

Get pumping

As bedtime approaches it is time to get those airbeds blown up

What went on in the night?

By the morning Aidan is not even sleeping on his airbed

Washing up

The Cubs help Shere Khan with the washing up

Very tidy

Michael folds his clothes before laying them out for kit inspection

Checklist

One way to make sure you bring your clothes home again it to have a checklist of what is in your bag

Kit Inspection

By laying the kit out the Cubs will hopefully make sure that they have all their own gear before they pack their bags

Packing the sleeping bags

One of the hardest parts of packing is getting that sleeping bag into its stuff sack. Baloo lends a hand

Don't eat Sammy Smartie

Allen explains the rules of his game

Group Photo

Almost time to go

Photos taken by Akela expect those marked ^ which were taken by Baloo

We normally hold this event at the hall but the leaders decided that we’d prefer somewhere with rather better facilities and so we have booked the County Training Centre at Earleywood Camp Site in South Ascot.

What kit should I buy?
The
Kit list includes some suggestions about the sort of kit you may need to buy for camping with the Cubs.

Behaviour at camp
Completing the first night away opens the door to future camping with the Cubs as we won’t let inexperienced boys come on our longer expeditions. However, there is more to camping than just surviving the night. At these camps the leaders are watching to see if the campers are ready to do further camps. For example, we might decide not to allow further camping if the Cub is always being spoken to for disruptive behaviour or is unable to manage their own kit. Having a messy tent or bedroom can make camping miserable for the person concerned and also the people they are sharing with. Similarly, disruptive behaviour can spoil camp for everybody else. In these cases we’d generally ask the person concerned to do the first timers camp again before they would be accepted for other camps. You may like to have a discussion about this with your Cub before he comes to camp.
