Summer Camp 2005
Ferny Crofts

2nd Bracknell

Guest List

In 2005 our Summer Camp took place from Saturday 23 to Saturday 30 July at Ferny Crofts camp site in the New Forest.

Being near the port of Southampton we decided on a nautical theme. As you'll see, each of the sixes was named after cruise ships on the 2nd Bracknell World Cruise.

We hope that you enjoy our postcard from our World Cruise.

SATURDAY - Southampton

Nearly there

Just round the corner from the campsite

Our site

We camped on site 12 which was conveniently located close to the car park (picture taken on site visit in January)

Time for dinner

After all the hard work putting the tents up we were all ready for dinner

Black magic

There had been no time to sort out a camp fire so we had our evening entertainment in the mess tent. Chil and Hathi get the old black magic working

SUNDAY - Mediterranean Cruise

Wet morning

Saturday night was wet and windy and there was more heavy rain to come on Sunday morning

Bad boy

Luke discovers that messing around at the breakfast table is not something we encourage

Breakfast

Shere Khan made the scrambled egg - and very nice it was too. We had to serve the food in the mess tent due to the heavy rain outside.

T is for Tomasz

Akela was in one of his creative ketchup moods

It's raining, it's pouring

The rain just seemed to get heavier as the morning went on. The boys went back to their tents to read and play games

What's going on?

By lunchtime the rain was easing and the Caronia tent heard something going on outside

Rather damp

A rather soggy game of cricket took place in our camp site area

Lunchtime

Ben's mum had made some very nice cakes which we were pleased to sample

Tent Inspection

Once the weather dried up we could do our tent inspection - important as we needed to check that all the kit was dry in the tents

Oriana

We used signal flags to spell out the names of the ships. Oriana was part of the P&O team

Oceana

With Oriana this tent made up the "Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company" six

Uganda

With Nevasa this tent made up the "British India Steam Navigation Company" six

Nevasa

British India and Peninsular & Oriental merged together to form the P&O team

Carpathia

With Titanic this tent formed the "White Star Line" six

Titanic

Well somebody had to be in Titanic didn't they

Caronia

With QM2 this tent made up the "Cunard Steamship Company Limited" six

Queen Mary 2

White Star Line and Cunard Steamship Company merged together to form the Cunard team

More cake

Time for a drinks break and this time it was Sammy's cakes

Deer in the forest'

We went off site to Bolderwood and saw the deer

Flag raid

There was also time for a wide game while we were at Bolderwood. James is about to steal the flag

Dinner

After a cool, wet day it was nice to see a hearty chicken stew for tea

MONDAY - On safari in Africa

What a mess

Heavy rain and strong winds overnight had wiped out the tent flags

Card school

In Caronia the cards were out before breakfast

Breakfast time

Eggy bread and bacon. Yummy

Tent inspection

Mang and Chil add up the inspection scores to see which tent has won the pennant today

Flagbreak

Tomasz breaks the flag and another day gets underway

Pony trouble

The New Forest ponies haven't got very good road sense

Bridge over the River Nile'

Our hike from Whitefield Moor was to take us to the source of the Nile - in the footsteps of Dr Livingstone

Wild animals'

It isn't just ponies that run wild. Still, the cows didn't seem to mind the Cubs

I'm watching'

A New Forest pony is wary of approaching Cubs

On the trail'

The path was clearly marked

Archery

After lunch it was time for our target practice. Team Cunard went first

On target'

If you look carefully you can see Jack's arrow heading for the target

Rifle shooting

Meanwhile, team P&O were trying out rifle shooting

Loading°

The gun was almost as tall as Luke

Sharp shooter°

Shere Khan also had a go

More archery

We swapped over activities so that P&O had a go on the archery

Ready, aim, fire

Shere Khan had a go at archery too (in her new coat)

Adventure Course starts here

After the shooting and archery it was time to go on our safari trail - through these tyres

Balancing act'

Along these beams

Caught in the net

By the time the Cubs got through here they were quite muddy

Splash!'

The rope swing was a very popular obstacle but few crossed it in the dry. Chris splashes down

Through here

Chris and James emerge from the tunnel

Swinging tyres

We weren't really sure what to do with these so just ran through them

Meanwhile...

Back on the swing it is Ben's turn to take a dip

Very wet

At the start of the activity Luke was wearing a white shirt

That's how to do it

Not everybody got dirty. James didn't get his feet wet and his shirt was still white at the end of the activity!

Chil swings past

Just to prove that the leaders could do it too. No danger of wet feet here. The Cubs show their approval

Whoops

Hathi wasn't quite so lucky

Dirty little boys

William and Gareth show off their once white t-shirts. Sorry Mums

Dinner time

All the dirty Cubs had showers before tea. Even Gareth is clean again

One to one

Baloo and Eamon have a little chat

Monday night camp fire

Have you seen my funky crocodile?

Shere Khan leads her song

There was a crazy moose that liked to drink a lot of juice

Coca cola came to town

Ben, Harry, Luke and Edward teach us all a new song

Monday was a very busy day with a lot of activities. We have pictures of most of the boys on the rope swing/in the puddle but there were too many to show on here so they have been put on our Fotopic site instead.

TUESDAY - South Sea Island

Tuesday morning

First thing to do in the kitchen is to get the kettle on. Note the planks on the floor to help keep the mud out

Sleepy heads

The Nevasa tent is fast asleep even though it is 7.45am

Alarm call

Baloo decides that the camp alarm clock is required

One scoop or two?

Linda ladles out the cornflakes

Full kit inspection

As the mini-campers were going home it was time for full kit inspection to try and help them pack just their own gear

Happy Birthday to you

It was Eamon's birthday with cake and presents all provided by his Mum but hidden away by the leaders

Time off for the kitchen

With it being banquet day the kitchen gets a welcome chance to have some time off

Designing

At the team P&O table there is a lot of drawing going on

Bit damp

Unfortunately the damp weather has made fire lighting a bit tricky

Cunard designing

Over at team Cunard the menu is being drawn

That's more like it

The Cunard fire is burning nicely

Akela on water duties'

Banquet day turns everything on its head. With the Cubs busy cooking Akela fills the water barrel

Busy preparing

Back on the Cunard table the fruit salad is made

The meal - team Cunard'

Shere Khan and Akela judged the banquet this year. Tom the waiter runs through the menu

In the kitchen'

Tomasz is left to do the cooking

Starters'

The judges tuck into their greek salad

Another kitchen shot'

Ben gets ready to serve the meal

Entertainment'

The judges realised that there was a lot of song to come when they discovered that "Freddy the Zebra had 10 stripes"

Banquet - team P&O'

Unfortunately the rain had started by the time the judges got to P&O. Their starter was a prawn salad to share

Main course'

The waiter brings the main course to put on the personalised place mats

Raining hard'

The judges try to ignore the fact that the table is now awash while they enjoy their main course

Entertainment'

Despite the rain the Cubs sing on - "What shall we do with the drunken sailor"

Time for lunch'

Once judging is over the teams get to eat the rest of the food. P&O tuck into their meal

Cunard lunch

It is noodles for main course on the Cunard table

Table decorations

Rather soggy but the P&O table decorations say it all

The banquet is always hard work and special mention must go to Team P&O for continuing with it despite the rain. It started so suddenly that there wasn't time to move everything into the mess tent. At the end of the meal the scores were 138 points to P&O and 141 to Cunard.

On Tuesday evening the mini-campers came back to Bracknell

WEDNESDAY - Chile for the Andes

Blindfolds on

The string trail was to take us through the foothills of the Andes

Bit prickly

With blindfolds on the way through the bushes was a bit tricky

Chuck wagon

Meanwhile, back on the field the catering team were back from the shops with more provisions

Back on the trail

Then it was time for the other group to take their turn on the trail

Time to climb

After lunch it was time for climbing

All kitted up

Team Cunard wait for the instructor to let them into the compound

Going up'

On the team P&O wall it was climbing that was the name of the game

Where did you get that hat'

Allen and Akela had to wear helmets if they wanted to come into the compound

Ready to climb'

Jonathan waits for his harness to be checked before he starts climbing

Going down

Meanwhile on the Cunard wall it is all about coming down. Ross makes it look easy

Tasty treat for tea

Raksha visited camp and was put to work peeling apples for Marian's crumble

Wednesday dinner

Homemade apple crumble and custard. Delicious

The wrath of Raksha'

The Cubs are reminded that Raksha doesn't like messing about at the meal table

Campfire

Despite a wet end to the day we still managed to end with a campfire

Raksha and Allen Davis visited us at camp on Wednesday and two new mini-campers came to stay. We have pictures of most of team P&O doing their abseiling but there were too many to put them all online

THURSDAY - Panama Canal

We spotted a strange glowing orb in the sky - yes, the sun finally came out. Just as well because we were off site all day

Off site

The Cubs arrive at a sunny and warm Bucklers Hard

Educational

At least some of the Cubs stopped throwing stones long enough to read about the river

Lunch

It was very pleasant having a picnic under the trees

Ahoy there

We had a boat trip down the Beaulieu River

Too much for some

The boat was pleasantly warm and the motion sent one or two of the boys off to sleep

Best foot forward

We decided to walk up the river to Beaulieu village

On the trail

The Cubs stop for a photo on the way

Reward

Ice creams for all from the shop in Beaulieu at the end of the walk

Akela's bananas'

Due to a shortage of kitchen staff Akela was pressed into service to help Marian

Too much excitement for one day

After the boys had gone to bed it wasn't long before Baloo's eyes closed too

FRIDAY - Caribbean

We started the day with the 2nd Bracknell one day series. Unfortunately this cricket match in the Caribbean sun was not captured on film.

Perfect 10

It isn't often that we give 10/10 for tent inspection but Oriana did very well. They went on to win the pennant for being the best tent of the week

Orienteering

After the cricket match we did the on-site orienteering course. All of the bases have names of creatures that can be found on the site

There it is

Martin and Toby find base 3 deep in the woods

Dot, dot, dash

Meanwhile, Kaa was teaching the Cubs morse code

Naturalists at work

Then it was off to the beach at Calshot. When we got out of the minibus there was a fine crop of blackberries that just had to be sampled

Got to throw

It is no good taking the Cubs to stony beaches and expecting them to resist the urge to throw stones into the sea

Move up the beach

We were taking the Cubs away from the populated area of the beach when James fell off one of the logs in the photo and had to go to hospital. Luckily he wasn't too seriously injured but it rather cut short our beach trip.

Last night campfire

The campfire for the last night was a monster but was so hot that the Cubs had to keep moving back

SATURDAY - Southampton

More rain

Just what you don't need when taking down the tents. The Cubs took shelter in the kitchen tent which was all that was left standing by then

Leave nothing but footprints...

Suddenly camp is all over and all that is left on the field are a few squares of yellow grass

Wet tents

Because of the rain when we were taking the tents down they all had to be dried properly before they could be put away. This meant putting them up in the garden or in the hall

In January the leaders went down to the site to have a look around. Here are the pictures from their visit

Welcome to Ferny Crofts

Ours is Site 12

This is the view from the car park. Vehicles are not allowed on the site so we thought being close to the van would be a good idea

A closer view

Part of the site is under the trees and the rest stretches out into the field

Looking back

The fire beaters mark the boundary with site 13

Woods

As well as the trees on our pitch, the site has extensive woodland

Camp fire circle

The official camp fire circle is located in the woods just off the main field

Orienteering

There is a fixed orienteering course on site

Activity Zone

Entry to the activity zone is not permitted without a leader

Assault course

Hopefully the assault course won't be quite so muddy in the summer

Archery

There is archery on site although the equipment has been put away for the winter

Small climbing tower

There is a small climbing tower at the corner of the main field

Large tower

If the small tower looks too easy there is always the large tower to try
