On 26 September 2004, over
1100 Cub Scouts and 300 adults from all across the county of Berkshire
got together for a day of activities at Chalfont Heights Scout
Camp Site. Almost 150 people went from our own District - with
the 2nd Bracknell contingent being the largest at 42 Cubs and 8
adults.
With that number
of children there was quite a queue for some of the more popular
activities such as shooting and archery. Luckily many of ours
had done it at Summer Camp so didn't mind not doing it this
time.
First of all we
have Akela's pictures

A County sized Grand Howl
Lynn Smith, Assistant County Commissioner for Cubs opened the day with a Grand Howl. Didn't go too well with over 1100 Cubs all doing their own thing |
Flag break
With the flag flying the day was open but Lynn had a bit of trouble getting that many Cubs to be quiet. We have enough trouble on a pack night with our 24! |
Passports
In addition to their green t-shirts, the Cubs had passports to record their activities |
What to do first?
There were loads of activities to choose from - shooting, archery, cooking, kite making, climbing and more. This group decided it would be best to play football. (Akela tears out hair in despair) |

Football
The 5-a-side football in full swing |
Badges, woggles and more badges
The badge stall was doing a good trade. Kingfisher and her group popped in to see what was for sale |
Best of friends really...
This event proved to be a good way to air frustrations caused by all the queuing |
Another queue
We caught up with Raksha's group as they were waiting for their go on the climbing wall. As you can see, they'd already made their kites |
Time for lunch
The bases closed at lunchtime so there was time for a sit down |
Huge picnic
It became a huge picnic as the whole of the county spread out on the grass for lunch. The noise was amazing! |
Time for a spot of cooking
Ben and William were keen to have a go at making twists |
Cooking nicely
The hot fire soon cooked the dough. The Cubs had to keep turning their sticks to stop the bread burning |
Jam please
With the twist cooked it was time to see if tasted as good as it looked |
Shopping!
The tuck shop was a popular destination. We caught up with Colin's group by the flagpole |
Campfire's burning
The afternoon ended with a big campfire |
Baloo was also
taking pictures and luckily took different things to Akela!
Spare a thought for the eagle
A very patient bird of prey was on display |
My turn
The Cubs took turns to have him perch on their hand |
Smile for the camera
Both Christopher and the eagle managed to look at the camera at the same time |
Circus skills
This was a popular base. Baloo has captured Thomas' plate while it was still spinning |
Caving
This was one of the most popular activities. It was dark inside so the hats and lights had to be checked |
Different group, same activity
More caving - now you know where the mud on their trousers came from |
Front of the queue
In the other field there was always a big queue for shooting. Thomas made it to the front in the end |
Go karting
The pedal go-karts were another popular activity |
In control?
The queue moved quite quickly here so there was the chance to have more than one go |
In the lead?
It was a bit narrow for racing and in any case the leaders in charge frowned upon that sort of activity! |
Alex wins
A close finish |

You can see
photos of the day on the County Website. If you look
hard enough you'll even see a few of our boys in the crowds.
Special thanks to
Mary Shields and Colin Edgar for helping us out with our large
number of Cubs on the day. We hope that you had a good time.
If you bought one
of the activity day badges then you'll be pleased to know that
it may be worn on your uniform for 6 months. It goes above the
world membership badge.

is a County Event.
